The Multi-Monitor

You've seen the pictures of the Big Dog's computers
having 2, 4, or even 8 monitors on just one computer. How
do they do that? Easy, Windows XP supports this feature
with ease.
Let's start with a dual monitor system. There are 4 ways
to set up this system. I will start with the most
recommended.
The First way is to purchase an Nvidia or ATI video car
that includes 2 video ports on it. I've been able to buy
one of these for as low as $30. You got to look hard, but
they don't have to cost over $100. 2nd is using 1 AGP
video card and 1 PCI card, most motherboards allow one of
each type on the system. 3rd is a product call Matrox DualHead2Go
(or TirpleHead2Go),
which tricks your computer into using one card to
powering 2 monitors as if they were one wide monitor. 4th
is to use a software solution to turn an old laptop into
an extra monitor
Getting a 4 monitor system takes a little more work. I've
seen 2 good ways to do this, I hope you got enough money
for all those LCD's. Otherwise the CRT's will keep you
warm.
First recommend solution is to actually purchase a quad
head unit, you can find a Matrox card on ebay for around
$100. 2nd is to find 2 Nvidia or ATI video cards, with
dual video ports, one being PCI and the other AGP.
Notice: Despite the video card accelleration, having
multiple monitors has been known to slow system
performance. Also, it is recommended to all video cards
use the same drivers, this is a known issue with Windows
Vista.
For a 8 monitor system, you will need 2 quad head cards
that one is PCI and other AGP.
Once installed, windows will go through a couple reboots
to load drivers and either a message should be displayed
or the screen will be cloned across all monitors. Once
system is booted right click on desktop and select
properties. Click tabs. On each monitor represented,
click and select "extend my windows destop to this
monitor." |
